Dr Elangovan offers initial assessments, ongoing treatment and second opinions. She strongly values working collaboratively with her colleagues including GPs, Obstetricians, Gynaecologists, Midwives, Psychologists and other allied health professionals.

EDUCATION

​

​After completing her undergraduate degree in psychology, she trained in medicine at the University of Sydney and completed specialty psychiatry training in New South Wales. Whilst a psychiatry registrar, she completed a Masters in Public Health at the University of Sydney. As a registrar, she was also on the Trainee Advisory Board of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry.

She has a wide range of experience in various adult inpatient and community psychiatry settings in both the public and private sector across rural and metropolitan settings. After training in perinatal psychiatry at the Mother-Baby Unit at St John of God, Burwood, she went on to be consultant perinatal psychiatrist at the inaugural public Mother-Baby Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She currently works in a specialist perinatal mental health team in Sydney caring for women's mental health from pre-pregnancy through to the first 24 months of the postnatal period. She has experience with depression, anxiety, OCD, Bipolar disorder, Postpartum psychosis, birth trauma, complex PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder.

Dr Elangovan is currently accepting patients (ages 25-60) at her practices in Hunters Hill and Gladesville. She also has admitting rights to the Mother-Baby Unit at St John of God, Burwood, in Sydney.

Pregnancy Planning and medication management for pre-existing issues such as bipolar disorder and previous postpartum psychosis.​

Complex grief and Trauma associated with Infertility, IVF and Pregnancy Loss

Assessment and Management of new or pre-existing mental health difficulties in pregnancy, postnatal and early parenting years including Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar disorder, Postpartum Psychosis, OCD, Birth Trauma, Complex PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder

Hormone-related mood changes including: 

  • premenstrual dysphoria (PMDD)

  • menopause (natural, surgical, chemotherapy or radiotherapy related)

Making a referral to see a psychiatrist
Referrals are accepted from GPs, other Medical Specialists and Nurse Practitioners

It would be very helpful to include details/copies of​​
  • Any  current or past psychiatry assessments or discharge summaries
  • Names of any specialists, midwives, or psychologists involved in the
       patient's care including a summary of their concerns, if any, regarding
       the patient's mental health
  • Up-to-date list of medications & medical conditions
  • Results of pathology done in last 6 months including FBC, EUC, LFTs,
       TFTs, Vitamin D, B12, Folate and Iron studies. Also a recent ECG.

**These details help me to contextualise, prioritise and triage referrals
accordingly. They also facilitate my ability to diagnose, formulate and
initiate treatment without delay when I do meet your patient.​
​
Email referral to referrals@drpreeyaelangovan.com. Indicate preferred 
clinic. Otherwise suitable referrals will be allocated to the clinic with first
availability.

The friendly administrative team will be in touch with your patient to
offer an appointment if suitable. If I am unable to offer an appointment, I 
will be in touch directly with the referrer to offer other suggestions.

Please expect a wait time of 7 business days for a response to a referral.
